Since 1995, multimedia services have been MediaLab's main research and development interest. Today we focus especially on audio and video content delivered to mobile phones and PDAs via streaming or downloading, as well as content services streamed for Sonera's broadband customers. MediaLab has also developed the award-winning Sonera Live streaming media platform.

DRM is a technology that protects content owners' rights when downloadable or streamed content is sold or distributed online. With DRM, content owners and distributors can configure usage rules that allow such business models as "try before you buy", promotional previews, and subscriptions. MediaLab focuses on both mobile and Internet DRM, with special emphasis on ringing tones, logos/pictures, games, and audio/video content. Read more »

In mobile broadcasting wideband services can be delivered simultaneously to numerous mobile terminals in the coverage area. MediaLab has been studying IP Datacasting over DVB-H since 2002 and Mobile Broadcast/Multicast Services
(MBMS) since 2004. MediaLab is involved in a Finnish IPDC pilot and has developed TeliaSonera's IPDC concept content service demo. We are also participating actively in the work of the joint corporation called Radio- ja Televisiotekniikan Tutkimus (RTT) Oy. Read more »

MediaLab has studied speech synthesis as an alternative way to deliver information, for example, to mobile phones. Services utilizing this technology include voice portals and e-mail readers.

We have also developed a lightweight method for producing "talking head" type animated characters which can be synchronized with an audio stream containing synthesized speech, and delivered to mobile devices in real-time over GSM and GPRS networks. Read more »
