New stream testing tools for 3G networks - Dec 28, 2004

TeliaSonera Finland's MediaLab has developed new testing tools for measuring and analyzing streaming performance. The tester for GPRS networks released in the spring (click to read news) can now be used also on EDGE and W-CDMA networks. Operators can use the tool to optimize and fine tune their networks. Also, service and technology development can gain great benefits from a thorough understanding of streaming traffic behavior under various network conditions. For more information, download and read the Testing Streaming in Mobile Networks White Paper.
The downstream tester simulates a situation where streaming content is sent from a server to the user's phone. Corresponding software for testing upstream traffic has also been developed at MediaLab. It can be used to simulate "see-what-I-see" type applications where for example video is streamed from the user's phone onto the network.
A short demo video illustrating the use of the downstream tester in a W-CDMA network is now available in RealVideo and Windows Media formats.
